Aadhaar features and eligibility :
1) What is Aadhaar?

Aadhaar is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India.

This number will serve as a proof of identity and address, anywhere in India.

Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar.

Each individual needs to enroll only once which is free of cost.

Each Aadhaar number will be unique to an individual and will remain valid for life. Aadhaar number will help you provide access to services like banking, mobile phone connections and other Govt and Non-Govt services in due course.

Some other information about Aadhaar :
Aadhaar will be :

** Easily verifiable in an online, cost-effective way
** Unique and robust enough to eliminate the large number of duplicate and fake identities in government and private databases
** A random number generated, devoid of any classification based on caste, creed, religion and geography

2) What are the features and benefits of Aadhaar?
One Aadhaar :

Aadhaar is a unique number, and no resident can have a duplicate number since it is linked to their individual biometrics; thereby identifying fake and ghost identities which result in leakages today. Savings from eliminating duplicates and fakes through Aadhaar-based identification will further enable governments to expand benefits to other eligible residents.

Portability :
Aadhaar is a universal number, and agencies and services can contact the central Unique Identification database from anywhere in the country to confirm a beneficiary’s identity.

Inclusion of those without any existing identity documents :
A problem in reaching benefits to poor and marginalized residents is that they often lack the identification documents they need to receive State benefits; the “Introducer” system which has been approved for data verification for the UIDAI will enable such residents to establish an identity.

Electronic benefit transfers :
The UID-enabled-Bank-Account network will offer a secure and low cost platform to directly remit benefits to residents without the heavy costs associated today with benefit distribution; the leakages in the current system will also be stemmed as a result.

Aadhaar-based authentication to confirm entitlement delivered to the beneficiary :
the UIDAI will offer online authentication services for agencies who wish to validate a resident’s identity; this service will enable confirmation of the entitlement actually reaching the intended beneficiary.

Improved services through increased transparency :
Clear accountability and transparent monitoring would significantly improve access and quality of entitlements to beneficiaries and the agency alike.

Self-service puts residents in control :
Using Aadhaar as an authentication mechanism, residents should be able to access up-to-date information about their entitlements, demand services and redress their grievances directly from their mobile phone, kiosks or other means.

In the case of self-service on the resident’s mobile, security is assured using two-factor authentication (i.e. by proving possession of the resident’s registered Mobile Number and knowledge of the resident’s Aadhaar PIN). These standards are compliant with the Reserve Bank of India’s approved standards for Mobile Banking and Payments..

3) Will getting Aadhaar be compulsory?
Any person can choose to apply for Aadhaar Card / Aadhaar Number. Similarly, agencies providing benefits and services may choose to use AADHAAR in their systems and may require that their beneficiaries or customers provide their AADHAAR numbers for these services.

4) What information is required to be provided by an individual to get an AADHAAR number?
Demographic information required :

** Name
** Date of Birth
** Gender
** Address
** Parent/Guardian details (required for children, adults may provide)
** Contact details phone and email (optional)

Biometric Information required :
** Photo
** 10 finger prints
** Iris

The UIDAI set up the Demographic data standards and verification procedure committee under the Chairmanship of Shri N. Vittal to define the data fields to be collected by the UIDAI and the verification process to be followed. The Data Standards Committee submitted its report on December 9, 2009. UIDAI also set up the Biometrics standards committee under the Chairmanship of Dr B.K Gairola (Director General, National Informatics Centre) to define the standards and the nature of biometric data that is required to be captured.

5) Why Aadhaar?
Aadhaar-based identification will have two unique features :

** Universality, which is ensured because Aadhaar will over time be recognised and accepted across the country and across all service providers.

** Every resident’s entitlement to the number.

** The number will consequently form the basic, universal identity infrastructure over which Registrars and Agencies across the country can build their identity-based applications.

** Unique Identification of India (UIDAI) will build partnerships with various Registrars across the country to enrol residents for the number. Such Registrars may include state governments, state Public Sector Units (PSUs), banks, telecom companies, etc. These Registrars may in turn partner with enrolling agencies to enrol residents into Aadhaar.

** Aadhaar will ensure increased trust between public and private agencies and residents. Once residents enrol for Aadhaar, service providers will no longer face the problem of performing repeated Know Your Customer (KYC) checks before providing services. They would no longer have to deny services to residents without identification documents. Residents would also be spared the trouble of repeatedly proving identity through documents each time they wish to access services such as obtaining a bank account, passport, or driving license etc.

** By providing a clear proof of identity, Aadhaar will empower poor and underprivileged residents in accessing services such as the formal banking system and give them the opportunity to easily avail various other services provided by the Government and the private sector. The centralised technology infrastructure of the UIDAI will enable ‘anytime, anywhere, anyhow’ authentication. Aadhaar will thus give migrants mobility of identity.

Aadhaar authentication can be done both offline and online, online authentication through a cell phone or land line connection will allow residents to verify their identity remotely. Remotely, online Aadhaar-linked identity verification will give poor and rural residents the same flexibility that urban non-poor residents presently have in verifying their identity and accessing services such as banking and retail.

Aadhaar will also demand proper verification prior to enrolment, while ensuring inclusion. Existing identity databases in India are fraught with problems of fraud and duplicate or ghost beneficiaries. To prevent these problems from seeping into the Aadhaar database, the UIDAI plans to enrol residents into its database with proper verification of their demographic and biometric information. This will ensure that the data collected is clean from the beginning of the program.

However, much of the poor and under-privileged population lack identity documents and Aadhaar may be the first form of identification they will have access to. The UIDAI will ensure that its Know Your Resident (KYR) standards do not become a barrier for enrolling the poor and has accordingly developed an Introducer system for residents who lack documentation. Through this system, authorised individuals (‘Introducers’) who already have an Aadhaar, can introduce residents who don’t have any identification documents, enabling them to receive their Aadhaar.

  1. I have enrolled my adar enrollment 20179152552044.
    When will come my aadhar card?

    1. You can check the status using enrollment id and Date/Time of your aadhar card.

  2. I am Rajesh Kumar. My date of birth is 16/11/1968. My aadhaar enrolment number is 1190/34026/00134 date and time is 27/05/2012 and 12:45:52. I have not received my aadhar card. Please tell me my aadhar card status.

  4. I have not received my Aadhar Card. My enrolment No.2007/33496/01275 dated 21/06/2012 09:32:14

    I have not received my aadhaar card which made on 13/07/2011 an my enrollment number is 1218/17791/05925. So please deliver my aadhaar card.

  5. What is minimum age required to apply for Aadhar card?

    1. Any individual, irrespective of age and gender, who is a resident in India and satisfies the verification process laid down by the UIDAI can enrol for Aadhaar.

      For children below 5 years no biometrics will be captured. Their UID be processed on the basis of demographic information and facial photograph linked with the UID of their parents. These children will need to be re-enrolled with biometrics of ten fingers, iris and facial photograph, when they turn 5. Their biometrics will be updated once they turn 15. Intimation to this effect will be mentioned in the original Aadhaar letter.
