CPAO’s Profile :
The Central (Civil) pensions are authorized through Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) functioning under the Controller General of Accounts. CPAO is administering the ‘Scheme for Payment of Pensions to Central Government Civil Pensioners by Authorized Banks (both Public Sector and some Private sector Banks)’.

Its functions include :
** Issue of Special Seal Authorisations (SSAs) for pension payments to Authorised Banks.
** Preparation of budget for the Pension Grant and accounting thereof.
** Reconciliation with and performance review of banks with respect to pension payments and disbursements.

The coverage of the Scheme extends to all pensioners of the Central Government employed in Civil Ministries/Departments (other than Railways, Posts, and Defence), National Capital Territory of Delhi, Union Territory Administrations without legislatures, retired Judges of the High Courts and the Supreme Court and All India Service Officers.

CPAO was created with the primary objective of simplifying procedure and reducing the number of agencies for pension payment and to expedite the process of authorization, revision and transfer of pension through Authorized Banks.

The working of CPAO is fully computerized and it maintains a databank of Central (Civil) pensioners. Over 8 lakh pensioners are provided pension related services by the CPAO through more than 40,000 paying bank branches all over the country.

  • I have forwarded Annexure IX to CPAO and PAO (DFS) in the month of June 2018 but till now, I am unable to get my PPO Number from CPAO. Also I have putforth my prayer to CPAO and also to Pension processing officer (IOB Bank) but I am unable to get any positive reply from them. Hence, I pray your good selves to take my requisition into consideration and thus help me to know the PPO Number at the earliest and oblige.

  • My PPO number is 860001000359. I have neither received the revised PPO nor the revised pension on the basis of 7th pay commission.

    • Information available from the Official Website :
The new 12 Digit PPO number is unique for each pensioner/family pensioner and it works as reference number for any communication made to CPAO. Pensioners can check status of their pension and lodge grievances through 12 Digit PPO number only because CPAO database recognize only 12 Digit PPO numbers.

CPAO was established on 01.01.1990 and, therefore, does not have record of pensions sanctioned prior to 1990 by various govt. offices. In order to create record of such pensioners in CPAO computer data base, information of such pensioners can be provided by PAO of pensioners parent office or the concerned CPPC duly supported with attested photo copies of old pension papers and get 12 digit PPO number allotted.
