Section ‘A’ – (Reading) :
1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
The youth is the most precious resource on earth. As a teacher, my advice to children is that they should try and excel in their education.Wherever they get time, Saturday, Sunday or other holidays, they should go the nearest village with their teachers and educate at least five people. They must learn to nurture nature andhelp in creating a knowledgeable society. In life there are going to be many problems. The challenge is to defeat all problems and succeed. We all face failures. But we should remember that the difficulties make us grow, so when your hopes, dreams and goals are dashed, search among the wreckage. You may fine a golden opportunity hidden in the ruins. I would like to narrate an incident .I was given the leadership of the SLV -3 project in 1973 and Prof. Satish Dhawan , my senior ,told me “I have given you a project a team and the money required . Now you have to do the job. Defeat the problems .After appointing you the project director, even the chairman of ISRO (Indian Space Research organization) works for you” . The entire space community was geared up for this task .In 1979, it took off in the early hours and the first stage worked beautifully .Then, it could not achieve its objectives as the control system malfunctioned. There was a press conference at Sriharikota, where Prof. Dhawan took responsibility for not achieving the goals of the mission. Remember, I was a mission director .I worked hard on figuring out what went wrong. After a year on July 18, 1980, we had a successful launch.

Questions :
(a) What does the writer advise the children to do on holidays. 2
(b) How should we face problems- 2
(c) How do the difficulties make us grow- 2
(d) Why did Prof. Dhawan take responsibility for failure of
SLV-3- 2

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :
Several times in the history of the world particular countries and cities or even small groups of the people, have attained a high degree of civilization. Yet none of these civilizations , important as they were ,have lasted, and none of the reasons why they did not last was that they were confined to a very few people .They were like little oases of civilization in the desert of barbarism . Now it is no good being civilized if everybody round about you is barbarous, or rather it is some good but it is very risky .For the barbarians are always liable to break on you and with there greater number and rude vigour scatter your civilization on the winds .Over and over again in history comparatively civilized people living in cities have been won in this way by barbarians coming down from the hills and burning and killing and destroying whatever they found in the plains .In the thirteenth century most of Europe was overrun in this way by the Mongols from central Asia and such civilization as then existed was nearly destroyed. Thus any people which has advanced in civilization too far beyond its neighbours has always been liable to be set upon and pulled back by the others ,just as if you build a high tower without people supports ,it is always liable to fall down to the level of the lower building round about it.
Questions :
(a) Why do advanced civilizations not last for long- 3
(b) Why is being civilized very risky- 3
(c) Who destroyed civilization in most of Europe in the 13th century- 3
